Washed-out or pale colors in a WhatsApp Status post can be a symptom of an HDR video being displayed on an SDR screen without proper conversion. However, appearance alone is not definitive proof. To diagnose the issue, compare the video's appearance at three stages on the same device: the original file in the Photos app, the prepared export from a tool, and the final live Status post. This helps identify exactly where the color shift is introduced.
A repeatable method
VividStatus is not designed as a tool for HDR color correction. The app renders to a standard sRGB color space but does not perform deliberate HDR-to-SDR tone mapping, which is a specific process required to accurately translate the wider range of HDR brightness and color. Using the app to simply re-encode an HDR video is not a documented method for fixing color issues and may not produce the desired result. Always keep your original HDR file unmodified for further testing.
Make the decision before exporting
For a controlled conversion, a video editor or encoding tool that explicitly documents its HDR tone mapping capabilities is recommended. When preparing video for broad compatibility, targeting a standard dynamic range (SDR) format is a common practice. For future recordings, you can check your iPhone's Camera settings to see if recording directly in SDR is a suitable option for content you plan to share widely on platforms like WhatsApp Status.
Practical target
A successful test is one where the converted video looks correct on your device before you post it, and a contact confirms it also looks correct on their end. If a proper conversion tool is not available, the most reliable approach is to use a source video that was originally recorded in SDR. Attempting to fix HDR color issues by simply re-encoding without tone mapping is unlikely to be effective.
