WhatsApp Status shows everything in a 9:16 portrait frame. A photo or video that arrives in any other shape gets cropped or padded by WhatsApp, and you do not get a say in which part survives. Three ways to reach the frame
- Smart crop — Fills the whole 9:16 frame and keeps the part of the picture that matters. Best for landscape video where the subject sits in the middle and the edges are just scenery.
- Fit with blur bars — Keeps every pixel of the original and fills the space above and below with a blurred, scaled copy of your own footage. Nothing is cut away, and nothing shows up as a dead black band.
- Custom crop — Drag the 9:16 frame over the source yourself. For the shots where the subject is off to one side and no automatic choice is going to guess right.

Why fit before you post, not after
The framing decision gets made either way. Hand WhatsApp a 16:9 clip and something has to give: roughly two thirds of the width disappears if it crops, or the frame gets padded for you. Doing it first means you see the result before anyone else does, and you can change it.
Fitting is about geometry, not compression. VividStatus publishes what it encodes to — 1080×1920 video and 1152×2048 photos on the one-tap route — and never claims to bypass WhatsApp’s own processing. WhatsApp decides the final encode after upload.
Framing questions
Does fitting to 9:16 stop WhatsApp from cropping my video?
In effect, yes — a file that already matches the frame has nothing left to crop. WhatsApp still applies its own encode after upload; fitting settles the framing, not the compression.
Are blur bars the same as black bars?
No. Black bars are the empty space left when a non-9:16 file is padded. VividStatus fills that space with a blurred, scaled copy of your own footage, so the frame looks full without cropping anything away.
Can I set the crop myself?
Yes. Custom crop lets you drag the 9:16 frame across the source and place it exactly where you want it.
Does this work for photos as well as video?
Yes. The same three framing modes apply to both, and photos export at 1152×2048 for the one-tap Status route.
